Checklist for a Working Abroad article

For “Working Abroad” articles, we’re looking for jobs available to a wide range of females from all around the world. We prefer not to share anything that is limited to a super small pool of applicants. We aim to provide job ideas that many people can do without years of specific experience.

Think of your post as a "How To" guide. If a friend said, "Hey, I want to do a similar job as you!" what would you tell her over a coffee or beer? Be casual yet informative. You really want your friend to get this job so add in any details that will make the process clear and easy.

This should be a job you’re currently doing or have done within the past year, so we continue to share the most up to date information. Please keep in mind that this is for jobs done in person, in-country, not online jobs.

If you’re a digital nomad wanting to get involved, check out the “Living Abroad” details on the next tab!

For a specific company:

If your article is about a job with a specific company (aka working with The Red Cross), refer to this checklist as you write:

  • What is the company?
  • What do they do?
  • Where do they work?
  • How did you find them?
  • What is the application process?
  • And the interview process?
  • Can the interviews be done remotely or best in country?
  • Do they pay for any travel expenses?
  • Is there any training involved?
  • How is it actually working for them?
  • Now that you got the job, anything you wish you knew in hindsight?
  • List of requirements highlighted at the top of the article
  • Add any relevant links for job (use the paperclip icon to attach on submission form)
  • Attach at least 5 pictures of you working/in the location (unedited, unfiltered- we will use our preset)
  • Finally, add 3-4 sentences bio of yourself, a profile pic, any personal links you want attached to your bio.

For an unspecified company:

If your article is about an unspecific company (aka teaching English in country X) , refer to this checklist as you write:

  • What is the job?
  • What country? Is it city specific?
  • How did you find out about the job?
  • What is application process like?
  • And the interview process?
  • Any tips to prepare for the interview?
  • Can the interviews be done remotely or best in country?
  • Does the job pay for any travel expenses?
  • Is there any training involved?
  • How is it now that you're actually working here?
  • Is there anything you wish you knew in hindsight?
  • List of requirements highlighted at the top of the article
  • Add any relevant links for job (use the paperclip icon to attach on submission form)
  • Attach at least 5 pictures of you working/in the location (unedited, unfiltered- we will use our preset)
  • Finally, add 3-4 sentences bio of yourself, a profile pic, any personal links you want attached to your bio.

Checklist for a Living Abroad Article

For “Living Abroad” articles, we’re looking for information about what it’s like to live as an expat in cities or towns around the world.

Please only send us a “Living Abroad” article if you have lived in the place for at least 3 months.

You can think of this as a “beginner guide” to a city. Give some details to the city, share about cool neighborhoods to live in and fun things to do. This guide will be used primarily for women looking to move there, so think about things like finding an apartment, getting a license or anything you would have liked to of known before you moved.

For your article:

Before you start writing about your city, check out this checklist to keep you on track.

  • What's the city?
  • Background or general info about the location
  • Breakdown of neighborhoods/districts/zones
  • Apartment hunting tips
  • Job hunting tips (if applicable to your experience)
  • Fun things to do/ social scene
  • Boring but important (any legalities to living there)
  • Visa requirements (need to have a job to stay? or can you rent a place on a tourist visa?)
  • Quality of life as an expat
  • General cost of living
  • Now that you're living there, anything you wish you knew in hindsight?
  • Bonus tips: transportation, shopping, must pack items.
  • Add any relevant links (can be backlinks to your socials/blog so long as it's relevant. No links to direct sales pages)
  • Attach at least 5 pictures in the location (unedited, unfiltered- we will use our preset)
  • Finally, add 3-4 sentences bio of yourself, a profile pic, any personal links you want attached to your bio.

FAQ's

Is my article guaranteed to be posted?

Yes, assuming it follows the checklist we’ve provided. We aim to post all of the articles sent to us, as long as they uphold the values and goals of AWA. Anything we do not feel is beneficial to the community will not be posted but we’ll reach out to you via email if we’d like you to change anything or add to your article.

Do I need to be a blogging pro to submit an article?

No way! We welcome anyone to write for us, even if English isn't your first language! We want each post to represent the writer’s personality so write like you’re talking to a friend and you’re telling them just how you got your job and how they can get hired too or gushing about your new international home.

What’s the basic format for an article?

For "Working Abroad" articles, the most important piece of information is the requirements. These must be highlighted at the top of the article in clear, unambiguous writing. We want all of our girls to know if the job can work for them before they invest their time!

For "Living Abroad" articles, it's most important you give a sense of what it's like to actually live in this place. They are not weekend guides or aimed at someone on holiday but instead would help the reader choose if they should pack up and move!

For the body, follow the checklist to ensure you’re providing as much information as you can to your reader. Aim for around 1200-1500 words separated into short paragraphs. Check out this post from Angela to make sure you’re on the right track.

Will you post my article exactly as I submit it?

We hope so! We reserve the right to edit your post once we have received it and make any edits necessary (i.e. grammar, spelling). We’ll never rewrite your article but we will ensure it is easy to understand and follows the guidelines. We also understand that not everything abroad is butterflies & rainbows but we do believe that positivity is key to living a happy expat life. Please refrain from submitting articles that are bashing places or jobs.

My pictures are not taken from a professional camera. Is that ok?

Yes, we understand many girls do not travel with professional equipment. Regardless, send us clear pictures best taken in bright, natural lighting. We want to make sure the community can see your gorgeous face! We are better able to edit your pictures using our preset when we receive them unedited and unfiltered. Please note, we might add in some of our own photos to your article if they fit with the content.

Which links can I add to my bio?

We want to grow together, as a community! As a thank you for writing for us, we’ll add any links to your social media accounts and/or blog. Just add your links to the spaces provided in the submission form. Keep in mind, we will not attach any links that are fishing for subscriptions, will send the reader to a 3rd party account or are direct links to sales pages.

Can I submit an article that is already posted somewhere else?

If you have written an article before that you think would be great for us, please rewrite it to make it unique for GGW. Add any information to ensure it follows the checklist or remove any unnecessary bits. If you did write this article or a similar one for another blog or website, ask for their permission before sending it to us! You’ll see an option to add a link to the other article when submitting yours so we can take a peak.

How will I know when my article is posted?

Don’t worry girl, we got you on this one! We’ll send you an email or reach out on social media with the link to your article once it’s live. Just keep in mind, we can’t guarantee a “post by” date when you submit your article. We’ll do our best to get it up quickly though! Also, if you subscribe, you will receive weekly email updates from AWA. Keep an eye out for your article & any others that might interest you!

What if I don’t want to write about a job or a city? I’d rather write a "Tips Abroad" article.

Our main focus at AWA is jobs and city guides, so you need to write a “Working Abroad” and/or "Living Abroad" post first. Afterwards, we’d love for you to write a “Tips Abroad” article. For any special requests though, shoot us an email and we’ll see what we can work out.

Share your story

1. About you

2. Social links

We want to connect you with every person that visits our website, so if you have some social media going on and want it to appear in your profile to expand your reach, send us your links!

3. Your article

To make it easier for you and us, we use Google Drive to share articles. That way we don't deal with weird file formats or corrupted files. So, create a Google Drive account (if you don't have one already) and write your article in a new Google Docs file. Add it to a folder and drop your pictures there so everything is in one spot. Double check that you've answered all of the points in the Article Checklist.

Once you're done writing and have added your pictures, right click on your folder name within Google Drive. Then click "get shareable link". On the popup, click "Share Settings." From the options, please select: "Anyone with the link can edit" and copy the link. Come back here and paste your link in the field below and then hit SUBMIT MY ARTICLE.

And that's it!
